My second Yellow Rose painting finished yesterday.  I have been diligently perfecting the qualities of the illusive rose.  I have attended two workshops in the last six months taught by master artists and although I have improved considerably, I still have a lot to learn.

I have been painting studies of Roses for a while now.  In this pursuit, I attended a workshop with Michael Klein in New York.  Michael's roses are incredible and although I learned a lot, I still have a long way to go.  My current teacher, Jason Mayr has been very obliging by bringing in roses to class every week and helping us in this endeavor.  Many of us who have subjected ourselves to this difficult task are showing improvement.  Anyway, the challenge continues.

Brown Pot

One of my favorite pots to paint.  Has an organic feel to it and wonderful coloring.

Tapestry in the background echoes the formality of tea in a turkish glass.

The variety of muted colors in the background work well with the subject.

Time for a nice glass of wine.

Ghostlly figures in the background are from a tapestry hanging behind the set-up.  That and the pattern on the rug were a bit challenging.

This was my first attempt at Sunflowers and I am quite pleased with it.

I have been painting "Still Life," lately and will be posting more frequently after a long absence.

Bird Rock

This is a scene of the area around Bird Rock on the 17 mile drive at Pebble Beach.  It was stared on site and finished in my studio.  I was attending an En Plein Air workshop.  The weather in Carmel was especially beautiful and unusual for July.  

Birches in the snow

Birches are wonderful to paint in watercolor.  They usually turn out well even if you aren't a seasoned painter.
I am trying to do a series of them because I love them so much.  I had three beautiful birches in my front yard in my previous house. In this new house, I have planted just one, but with multiple branches.

Ocean dunes in watercolor

A very simple watercolor with an emphasis on clouds which take up two-thirds of the paper.  

Country Side Barn

I have been doing some watercolors lately and this is one of my latest.  It was done in a split complementary

color scheme using Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Blues.  Not using green for the trees was at first odd but it's a good practice to limit your colors in this way.  

Sacramento River

I repainted this scene which was originally painted during an En Plein Air workshop with Calvin Liang in Sacramento in January of 2011.  It was wonderful to be instructed by Calvin who is an amazing painter. 

Point Lobos Cypress

Point Lobos in Carmel has always been one of my favorite places to visit,  hike and photograph.  This was painted later in the studio.  I like the way it came out.
